XHOSA King Xolilizwe Sigawu on Sunday called for a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, due to arrive in South Africa on Tuesday, saying he wants an apology for the British oppression of his people in the 19th century. Sigawu told SABC television the Xhosa are still suffering because the British seized their cattle and land in the eastern part of South Africa. He said an apology from the queen, who will arrive in South Africa on Tuesday for a six-day visit, would be “a start” but hinted that the tribe would also like financial compensation. The Xhosa also want Britain to return the skull of their King Hintsa who was killed in 1835 during the sixth border war.Though historians dispute this, the Xhosa believe his head was taken as a trophy by British soldiers.
