A HOSPITAL official confirmed on Monday that Ethiopia’s former dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, is being treated for heart disease in the Park Lane Clinic in Johannesburg. Mengistu, the army officer who ruled Ethiopia for 17 years after overthrowing Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974, arrived in South Africa on Thursday for specialised medical care. He has been living in Zimbabwe since 1991 when he fled Ethiopia as rebels advanced on the capital Addis Ababa to topple his regime. Mengistu is wanted in his country for organising the “Red Terror” campaign in which tens of thousands of opponents of his military-Marxist regime are believed to have been slaughtered.
