THE Angolan Central Bank launched a new currency, the kwanza, on Wednesday as part of a monetary reform program to simplify small transactions. “If you want to buy something small, you have to use large packets of readjusted kwanzas,” Aguinaldo Jaime, the central bank governor, said. “That is something we want to correct.” Indeed, the old currency, the readjusted kwanza, comes in denominations of 50000 to five million, and one dollar (euro) is worth about 5,4-million readjusted kwanzas. The new currency will coexist with the old for several months until the readjusted kwanza is entirely phased out, the bank said.
