DEAD STOWAWAYS AMONG COCOA

SIX African stowaways were found dead in the hold of a Liberian cargo ship that docked at the northern Brazil port of Ilheus on Friday. A seventh stowaway was found alive. The vessel had sailed from the Cote d’Ivoire capital Abidjan ten days ago with a cargo of cocoa. Police says the unidentifed men probably died of poisoning from a toxic powder used to protect the cocoa from insects. The seventh man survived because he did not hide in the hold. This is the second time this year that stowaways have been found dead in the hold of a ship bringing cocoa to Ilheus.
