12 KILLED IN ALGERIA

AT least 12 people were killed in an attack by armed Islamic militants in the region of Ain Defla, west of Algiers. Several newspapers reported 13 people were killed in Monday’s attack. Three other people were wounded, two seriously, and five young girls were kidnapped. The dead, including five women, were employed at a center for handicapped children. According to the terms of a peace deal set out by President Abdelaziz Algerian Bouteflika, all Islamic militants who are not implicated in murders, rapes or bomb attacks in Algeria’s civil war are eligible for full or partial amnesty if they surrender during the six months from July 13, 1999 to January 13, 2000. Since then, more than 100 people have been killed, including some 30 soldiers and 40 armed Islamists.
