PUBLIC Works Minister Stella Sigcau on Tuesday announced a programme to “re-image” a number of public buildings which have been associated with apartheid. Among the structures to be revamped is the farm Vlakplaas, near Pretoria, once the headquarters of the apartheid police death squad; the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the executive seat of government; the Palace of Justice, also in Pretoria; and the imposing South Africa House in London. Changes might not mean structurally changing the “ugly” buildings already there, but could involve “other developments,” Sigcau said, without elaborating. She was unable to say what the project might cost.
