ASA slams Nocsa over mismanagement claims

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Cape Town | Wednesday 2.00pm.

ATHLETICS South Africa has hit back at the National Olympic Committee of South Africa after a weekend report, quoting Nocsa secretary-general Dan Moyo, claimed financial mismanagement within ASA.

Banele Sindani, ASA chief executive, responded to the claims by saying that Nocsa is attempting to discredit his organisation, and has denied the accusations, saying that they have no basis.

Moyo implied that grants, amounting to thousands of rands, destined for athletes who are members of Nocsa’a Operation Excellence were witheld by ASA.

The spat is the latest development in an ongoing power struggle between the two organisations that has yet to be resolved. Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour has even entered the fray in an attempt to iron out the matter.

Sindani added that ASA considers Moyo’s statements to be defamatory, and that it will seek legal advice.

Sindani also said that his organisation’s money matters ave been open to public scrutiny and that Nocsa were given detailed schedules on the dispersion of funds.

Sindani challenged Nocsa to present documentary evidence in support of their claims, and said that if they are unable to do so, ASA will demand a retraction of the allegations and a public apology.
