TEICH NOW NEWPORT SKIPPER

FORMER Springbok captian Gary Teichmann is the new skipper for his Welsh side Newport, after Shane Howarth stepped down. The 31-year-old New Zealand-born fullback who turns out for Wales has only been captian for 13 matches, but said it took “a big weight off my shoulders”. Teichmann was South Africa’s most successful leader, taking them to a world record equalling 17 consequetive wins and appearing a record 39 times for his country. He was controversially dumped before last year’s World Cup and left Natal after their Currie Cup final loss to the Lions to play for Newport.
