HUNDREDS of residents have fled clashes between two communities as the death toll from four days of violence rose to 32 in the southwest Nigerian state of Osun, witnesses said on Tuesday. Renewed hostilities erupted on Friday between the people of Ife and Modakeke, two age-old rivals fighting over ownership of land and political authority in the area about 230 kilometres northeast of Lagos. By Monday, the toll had risen to 30 and two more people were killed in an overnight clash by the feuding communities, witnesses said. Residents have fled to the neighbouring towns of Iyakere, Oke-Eso, Egendore, Odo-Okun and Ogbo Agbara following continuous fighting in the area. Witnesses said it appeared the police were unable to contain the crisis. However police disputed the claim and said reinforcements had been ordered in from neighbouring states to bring the situation under control.
