LAKE VICTORIA’S POLLUTION THREATENS MILLIONS

RAW sewerage flowing into Lake Victoria is threatening the health of 30-million people in East Africa. The British Airways Travel Clinic says travellers to the region should be extremely careful with the food and water they consume. Sewerage dumping increases the danger of cholera, typhoid and dysentery epidemics. The European Union banned the import of fish from Kenya last year, after fishermen started selling fish that had died after pesticides were dumped in waters of the Great Lake Region. The sewerage dumping means that the EU’s ban on fish imports from Kenya will continue, bringing economic hardship to the region.
