THOUSANDS of Mozambicans have started fleeing the ruined southern town of Chokwe ahead of a predicted fresh wave of floods, relief workers said on Thursday. Some 15000 people have returned to the town in recent days, despite warnings from the government of the possibility of fresh rains. Hundreds of thousands of others are still in accommodation centres on higher ground. Forecasters warned earlier this week that river levels in Chokwe are likely to rise as the rainy season progresses, although the floods are not expected to be as severe as last month’s.
