THE International Monetary Fund has approved a $50-million credit for Mozambique and says the funds will be available on an accelerated basis in light of the devastating floods that have struck the country. The IMF’s executive board approved the loan under terms of the IMF’s “poverty reduction and growth facility (PRGF),” which makes financial assistance on concessional terms available to low-income countries that agree to implement market-oriented economic reforms. United Nations officials estimate that some 536000 people in Mozambique have been displaced by flooding and are living in special facilities, with their numbers growing each day.
