UNITA KILLS 19

A RECENT ambush by Unita rebels on a civilian convoy in Angola killed 19 people and wounded 11, the Portuguese agency Lusa said on Tuesday. Angolan national police spokesman Castro Hilario told Lusa the attack occurred on Friday in Lunda Norte province, and that the dead include five soldiers escorting the convoy of 12 vehicles carrying people and merchandise. Details of the ambush were not released until after an army mission was completed to recover the victims’ bodies, Lusa said. Unita has issued several statements this year saying it has killed hundreds of government soldiers in the latest stage of a civil war that has raged almost continuously since the southwest African country won independence from Portugal in 1975.
