JUSTICE MINISTER LEADS UN CONGRESS

JUSTICE Minister Penuell Maduna has been elected president of the United Nations 10th Congress on Crime and Justice. Speaking in Vienna, he said countries needed to strengthen efforts to combat crime. Crime was bemong increasingly technologically advanced, transcending international boundaries, he told delegates, and the fight against criminals therefore necessitated international co-operation and co-ordinated strategies. Speaking at the same congress, National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka said there was more pressure on the criminal justice systems in societies in transition than in settled democracies. The congress, which is held every five years and ends on April 17, is being attended by over 3000 representatives from over 100 countries.
