PROBE FINDS ET RECEIVED ‘PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT’

A PROBE by the Department of Correctional Services has found that jailed AWB leader Eugene Terre’blanche received preferential treatment when he was transported from the Potchefstroom prison to an outside hospital. “It appears that proper prison administration and security measures were not properly followed and disciplinary action against personnel is underway,” the department said in a statement. The investigation found that Terre’blanche was not handcuffed when transported to the hospital and was also not accompanied by the required number of security officials. Proper documentation allowing Terre’blanche to be taken outside the prison was also not completed. At the same time the department has found that the embattled AWB leader was verbally threatened by fellow inmates. It also found that there were grounds for Terre’blanche to be taken to hospital. Terre’Blanche was committed to the Potchefstroom prison on Thursday, March 30, to serve a one-year jail term for assault. He was transferred for security reasons to the Rooigrond Prison in Mafikeng the following Saturday.
