DEATH TOLL REACHES 101

TRANSPORT Minister Dullah Omar is concerned at the high death toll over the Easter weekend, with 101 fatalities recorded at 2pm on Monday since the start of the break. KwaZulu-Natal, with 25 fatalities, has the highest incidence of road deaths, followed by Mpumalanga (19), Northern Province (17), Free State (11), Eastern Cape (10), North West (7), Western Cape (5), Gauteng (4) and Northern Cape (3). According to Arrive Alive, this year has seen a decline in fatal crashes, but said that an informed observation cannot be made as provinces are still analysing statistics. Omar called on pedestrians to take extra precautions, as pedestrians accounted for 38 fatalities over the weekend.
