SA JOURNALIST RELEASED BY ZIM POLICE

SOUTH African photojournalist Obed Zilwa, arrested over the bombing of the Harare offices of the Daily News newspaper, told reporters after his release on Saturday that he had been worried but not badly treated. Zilwa, who was arrested on Wednesday, said he was concerned when he was not charged or released within 48 hours of his arrest as stipulated by law. His lawyer, Jonathan Samkange, said police had decided on Saturday that Zilwa had no case to answer and he would be free to leave the country on Tuesday after the attorney-general’s office confirmed the decision not to prosecute. Monday is a public holiday in Zimbabwe. The photographer had to surrender his passport and air ticket. Zilwa, a photographer for the Associated Press (AP) agency, was arrested on suspicion of taking part in the bomb attack at the Daily News offices last Saturday night. Police said his car had been seen speeding away from the scene shortly after the blast. Zilwa said he had been driving in the city when he heard the explosion, realised it was a bomb, and sped back to his hotel to fetch his cameras. South African author and 1991 Nobel Prize winner for literature Nadine Gordimer added her voice to the protests on Friday and accused the government in Harare of using “terror tactics.”
