UGANDA is working on a programme to re-introduce the rhinoceros, poached to extinction over 10 years ago, Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) officials said on Thursday. UWEC, which deals with the preservation of endangered wildlife species in Uganda, has consequently launched an appeal for up to $100,000 dollars, required for the initial restocking. An official at the center, about 33 kilometres south of the capital Kampala, said the programme was being launched in three stages, the first being to requisition two rhinos at Entebbe. The white rhino was last sighted in the country’s jungles in 1970.
