MBEKI TO MEET CLINTON ON MONDAY

PRESIDENT Thabo Mbeki meets with President Clinton at the White House on Monday. The two leaders will be discussing regional issues, like the unrest in Zimbabwe, Congo and Sierra Leone. But the public focus of his visit will be on AIDS and Mbeki’s unconventional ideas about the AIDS virus, which has infected about ten percent of the people of South Africa. Among other things, Mbeki questions the efficacy of AZT, a drug widely used in the West to slow the progress of the disease. Mbeki has said he’s determined to find other therapies for the disease.
