AU CHIEF IN TALKS ON HORN CONFLICT

ORGANISATION of African Unity chief Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Algerian president, arrived in Addis Ababa on Wednesday and went into talks on the Horn of Africa conflict with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Bouteflika’s special envoy Ahmed Ouyahia said the OAU chairman wanted to accelerate the pan-African body’s efforts to end the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. “He decided to come today to Addis Ababa himself to try to reach this goal of stopping fighting,” Ouyahia said. The OAU on Wednesday called on both sides in the war, which resumed May 12, to withdraw their troops from the positions they held before the conflict first erupted in May 1998. The pan-African body called for an immediate response from both sides and also appealed for a resumption of the peace process it has spearheaded since late 1998. Indirect talks between the two sides broke down in Algiers on May 5.
