NEW FIREARMS LAW TABLED

CONTROVERSIAL draft legislation, which proposes that gun licences will have to be regularly renewed and that anyone wanting one will have to undergo compulsory competency training, was tabled in Parliament on Monday. The government claims the Firearms Control Bill will help stem the proliferation of illegal weapons, but opposition parties say it will be difficult to implement and make it difficult and expensive for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves. The bill increases maximum penalties for people illegally possessing weapons, ups the minimum age at which people can legally own guns from 16 to 18 and restricting the number of guns and amount of ammunition people can buy.
