THE leader of Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) indicated Sunday that he would move to expel former Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam if the MDC wins parliamentary elections due next month. “There is no room here in Zimbabwe for Mengistu,” Morgan Tsvangirai said. Colonel Mengistu, ousted nine years ago, has been living in an affluent suburb of Harare ever since, keeping a low profile and under tight security. His 16-year Marxist military regime is believed to have killed tens of thousands of opponents, most during its so-called “Red Terror” campaign of 1977 and 1978. In Addis Ababa, hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians marked the ninth anniversary Sunday of Mengistu’s violent ouster, but the celebrations turned into a demonstration of support for Ethioia’s war against Eritrea, with the crowd chanting patriotic songs and burning effigies of Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki.
