Mandela to meet Burundi president

Former president Nelson Mandela, chief mediator in Burundi’s peace process, is to meet Burundian President Pierre Buyoya and Defence Minister Cyrille Ndayirukiye on Wednesday. The talks come ahead of a planned visit by Mandela to Burundi later this month to meet with armed groups and people in the country’s controversial regroupment camps. Mandela’s office has declined to elaborate on the talks with Buyoya and Ndayirukiye, other than to say they are part of the ongoing peace process. The 81-year-old statesman has drawn up a 15-point document for peace based on proposals from delegations to earlier rounds of peace talks being held in the Tanzanian town of Arusha.
