RWANDA on Sunday announced the “unilateral withdrawal” of its troops from the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) city of Kisangani, where they have been fighting Ugandan troops for the last six days, a foreign ministry statement said. The announcement came after Rwanda claimed on Saturday to have driven Ugandan forces out of the diamond-rich city, where the fighting has caused extensive damage and more than 1000 civilian casualties, according to the country’s health minister. The decision was taken after the head of the Ugandan army, Brigadier James Kazini, “issued an ultimatum to the Kisangani population to vacate the city or face imminent death,” the statement added.
