Mandela to visit Burundi camp

Former President Nelson Mandela is due to visit one of Burundi’s controversial “regroupment camps” as he continues his mission to try to bring peace to the troubled country. Mandela is to visit Mubimbi camp, home to 40000 Hutus, near the capital Bujumbura. Last year, the Burundi government rounded-up hundreds of thousands of Hutus and put them into so-called “regroupment camps” — ostensibly for their own safety — as a long-simmering civil war flared anew. Critics said they were “concentration camps” rife with disease and squalour that also gave the army the opportunity to maraud through the deserted countryside with impunity. Mandela, appointed to mediate between the two sides of a civil war that has killed 200_ 000 people, arrived in Burundi on on Monday for a three-day visit.
