ETHIOPIANS TO SIGN OAU CEASEFIRE

AN Ethiopian delegation will head to Algiers to sign a ceasefire agreement brokered by the Organisation of African Unity on Sunday. An Ethiopian government official said that the delegation would likely be at the ministerial level. After claiming further military gains Wednesday, Ethiopia officially accepted the OAU plan which Eritrea had already agreed to in Algiers. Also on Thursday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has called foreign diplomats in Addis Ababa to a meeting at his offices for an update on the Horn conflict. Eritrea this week criticized Ethiopia for delaying its reply to the plan. Algeria, which holds the OAU’s rotating presidency, hosted 12 days of indirect talks which began late last month. A US delegation led by Anthony Lake, Washington’s envoy to the Horn of Africa, was also expected to arrive in the Algerian capital by the weekend, to witness the signing.
