HANSIEGATE BROADCAST RIGHTS GOES TO COURT

THE Cape Town High Court is expected to hear arguments on Monday on whether the King Commission’s inquiry into alleged cricket matchfixing can be broadcast live on radio and television. Last week Live Africa Network News launched a court application against the commission’s ban on television and radio coverage of the inquiry. The court allowed the testimony of sacked cricket captain Hansie Cronje to be broadcast live. Judge Edwin King ruled at the start of the enquiry that the presence of cameras and broadcasting equipment will reduce the effectiveness of the probe by placing witnesses under unnecessary pressure. LANN chief executive Paul Martin Cainer said that it is the constitutional right of South Africans to hear live testimonies. Cronje will face his cross-examination on Tuesday.
