ETHIOPIANS IN ERITREA PERSECUTED

ETHIOPIA has called on the international community to intervene on behalf of its nationals living in Eritrea, whom it claimed have been subjected to an “intensive campaign of hatred.” A foreign ministry communique said Eritrea’s sizeable Ethiopian community had suffered “persistent acts of reprisals and racist incitement (carried out) by the Eritrean government.” The statement demanded that Eritrea allow Red Cross officials access to Ethiopians being held in “concentration camps.” The appeal comes in the wake of last week’s announcement by the Eritrean government that it was repatriating Ethiopians living in the country. Between 40000 and 65000 Ethipians live in Eritrea, according to official estimates.
