NAWAAL DEANE, Johannesburg | Monday 1.00pm.
EMBATTLED Bafana Bafana coach Trott Moloto has agreed to work as an asistant to Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Parreira after being handed an ultimatum by the South African Football Association to work as an assistant, or face the sack.
A Safa technical committee report confirmed Moloto’s inexperience and it was decided that Safa would maintain the rotation approach.
“Trott will have been familiarised with Parreira’s approach and when he goes to the junior teams, he will have a full understanding of how to prepare the boys for the senior team,” Safa officials said.
Parreira, however, has not accepted the position yet, and Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, the South African under-23 coach has also been linked to the job as Bafana coach.
Mashaba has also rejected the offer, saying that he is so focused on preparing the under -23 players for the Sydney Games, that he will not have time to train the senior squad.
“The Olympics are just as important as the 2002 World Cup and to play dual roles under such circumstances is almost impossible,” explained Mashaba who has become one of the most popular coaches after leading the Amaglug-glugs to the Olympic Games.
His decision leaves Safa with a short-list comprising Parreira and Zimbabwean coach Clemens Westerhof. Parreira, however, is asking for a monthly salary of R300000 an amount which is likely to prove too steep for Safa.
