KENYAN STUDENTS RIOT OVER CONDITIONS

KENYAN students rioted on Friday in protest at conditions in their schools and colleges. A university, a teacher training college, a national polytechnic and a secondary school were closed by the protests. Egerton University at Njoro, 240km west of Nairobi, was closed indefinitely after students held two top officials — Professors Japheth Kiptoon and Julius Meme — captive in their office until police came to their rescue. More than 500 Kenya Polytechnic students in Nairobi also went on the rampage and fought running street battles with police on Friday over power and water rationing in their hostels. Riot police fired teargas cannisters to disperse the rioting students, who retaliated by throwing stones and other missiles along Haile Selassie Avenue, triggering a major traffic jam in the city. Elswhere, police used teargas to disperse more than 300 students of Kamkunji Secondary School in Nairobi’s eastern suburbs who were protesting against high school fees and poor management of the day school.
