SIXTEEN KILLED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION

SIXTEEN people died instantly when a bakkie collided head-on with a school bus in Northern Province on Tuesday morning. The 16 people were in the bakkie and were going from Vhulaudzi village to Louis Trichardt when they hit the bus in misty weather on the Witvlag road at about 6.20am. Provincial police spokesman Senior Superintendent Phuti Setati said the bus passengers, seven schoolchildren aged between 13 and 20 from a school near Louis Trichardt, were only slightly injured. Setati said it was not clear what caused the accident and that police had opened a culpable homicide case. The names of the deceased have been withheld until their next of kin have been informed. The schoolchildren were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and discharged.
