THE Archbishop of Ouagadougou, Jean-Marie Compaore, has asked 128 African refugees holed up in the city’s cathedral for three months to move out. The archbishop said in a letter that “the grounds for the hospitality offered no longer existed” and that their stay in the church had “become an additional obstacle to the resolution of the crisis.” The refugees, who have criticized Burkina Faso as being unwelcome, have been living in the church for the past 96 days. They have asked to be transferred to a western country. But the archbishop said he felt that “three months of hospitality was more than enough to alert public opinion.” The refugees have asked the archbishop to organise transportation to take them to “any border.” – AFP
