FIVE DIE, 10 INJURED IN AMBUSH

POLICE are investigating the possibility that the five people shot dead and 10 others wounded at the KwaMashu men’s hostel north of Durban were led into an ambush. The shooting followed a group of angry hostel residents marching to a local police station to demand the release of two suspects arrested for a murder. Three of the five killed appeared to have taken part in the march, because they had been carrying traditional sticks like the rest of the protesters. “At this stage we don’t know if the marchers were shot or if they did the shooting,” said a police official, who confirmed that AK-47 assault rifles were used in the shooting.
