CHAOS AS POLICE, TROOPS CLASH IN DRC

SEVERAL Congolese soldiers were killed and at least 16 injured during clashes between military police and government troops at a military camp in Kinshasa, a senior Congolese official said. General Francois Olenga, head of the combined Congolese armed forces, said regular army units stationed at Camp Tshatshi mistook military police for rebel infiltrators. Both sides suffered casualties but the final death toll is not yet known. ”We had to intervene forcefully to calm down the situation, with an elite unit and a light armoured vehicle,” Olenga said, adding that the military camp had been sealed off. A witness in the vicinity said she had heard shooting that lasted about an hour. Camp Tshatshi was the scene of violent clashes in August 1998, when Congolese soldiers mutinied at the start of a Tutsi-led rebellion. – Reuters
