65 ETHIOPIANS MASSACRED IN TRIBAL CONFLICT

AT least 65 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an attack with automatic rifles and hand weapons by a powerful Ethiopian tribe. Members of the Borena tribe attacked the smaller Garri tribe in the district of Arero, 700km south of Addis Ababa. Local authorities said at least 65 died in the massacre, while other sources said some 40 corpses, mostly women and children, had been identified. The Ethiopian army was on its way to Arero, but some fear the situation might escalate if more troops do not arrive soon. Several Garri children have been placed under police protection. Relations between the two tribes have reportedly been tense for a long time due to disputes over grazing lands, water and neighbouring territories. – AFP
