TEN people, including children, were killed when a wedding party was bombed during the military assault on Muslim rebels on the remote Philippine island of Jolo. Many of the 700 civilian evacuees, arriving in nearby Zamboanga after fleeing the assault on the Abu Sayyaf rebels on Jolo, reported hearing artillery and bomb explosions day and night. One grandmother said she had seen the bodies of people killed in the bombing. ”There were many killed, civilians, children,” said Annong Dediurie, who added at least one of the couple getting married was a member of the Abu Sayyaf. ”I saw a child’s body, without legs, without a head.” At least 11 rebels and civilians have died during the massive military assault on the Abu Sayyaf, who had been holding 19 hostages on Jolo. Two French hostages have been found safe and sound on Jolo, a boost to the government of President Joseph Estrada which has come under increasing pressure at home and abroad to end a crisis which has dragged on for months. – Reuters
