MOZAMBIQUE DEATH TOLL AT 38

TWELVE more people have died in northern Mozambique from violent demonstrations over the results of last year’s general election, bringing the death toll to 38, Radio Mozambique reported on Saturday. The latest deaths occurred in the northern town of Montepuez, 1 650km north of Maputo, where about 500 armed supporters of the RENAMO opposition party still control parts of town, the report said. The report did not provide details on the deaths. The Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) party of former rebels has staged protests since Thursday last week at what it claims were rigged general elections in December 1999. In northern and central Mozambique, where RENAMO’s support is based, the protests turned into violent clashes with police. Nowhere was the violence worse than in Montepuez, where a total of 24 people have died, as former RENAMO guerrillas occupied public buildings, including administration offices and police stations. – AFP
