THE death toll on South Africa’s roads since the start of the new year reached 137 on Saturday, the road safety campaign Arrive Alive said. The total of road deaths since the holiday season began in December has now reached 922. A total of 785 people – 171 fewer than in December 1999 – were killed in 565 fatal accidents involving 713 vehicles last month. Since January 1, KwaZulu-Natal had recorded 25 deaths, the Eastern Cape 20 Mpumalanga 21, Gauteng 23, Northern Cape 11, Western Cape 22, the North West 6, Free State 7, and Northern Province 2.
