MALAWI MP THRASHED BY OWN PARTY

A MALAWIAN legislator has been beaten by young supporters of his own party for his ties to a group that opposes a third term for President Bakili Muluzi. Bamanai Zgambo, a ruling party lawmaker, was beaten by a group of the party’s “young democrats,” said Peter Chupa, a senior official with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Zgambo has fled Kasungu for his home village, fearing for his safety. The NDA was formed earlier this month by a former member of Muluzi’s cabinet to oppose his possible bid for a third term in 2004. – AFP
