Making Rands & Sense

The Mail & Guardian, with Alec Hogg and the Moneyweb team, will launch a brand-new business section, Rands & Sense, to be published weekly in the M&G from March 9.

Rands & Sense will bring M&G readers a business section anyone can understand, with insights from leading analysts.

The section will be compiled and written by respected financial journalist Alec Hogg and the Moneyweb team. It promises to bring fresh insights into the world of business and economics, not available in any of South Africa’s other business publications.

Howard Barrell, M&G editor, says: “The new section is part of our strategy to serve our core readership better and to expand the appeal of our brand. Alec and his team are without peer in business coverage. We are very fortunate and thrilled to be in business with them.”

Hogg and his team have already developed a large and loyal following through the daily Classic Business show broadcast on Classic FM in Gauteng, on P4 in KwaZulu- Natal and the Western Cape and Ofm in the Free State, in addition to their flagship Internet publishing site moneyweb.co.za.

Ringing in the changes

After 10 years at Times Media Limited, Ian Tasman (above) has joined the M&G as director of sales, marketing and circulation. The former group general manager of sales at BDFM has worked on publications such as Financial Mail, Business Day and Sunday Times.

Tasman says he made the move so he can pursue new challenges. “The M&G brand is unique and offers a fantastic readership profile for the advertising market.”

He says the growth in circulation shows advertising decision-makers that the paper is highly sought after, well-read and in demand. Tasman aims to heighten the awareness of the M&G brand and grow advertising volumes and revenue.
