MATTERS OF FACT

In an article entitled “Durban deputy mayor in fraud probe” in the Mail & Guardian of March 2 to 8, it was reported that an investigation into allegedly corrupt practices involving councillor Logie Naidoo was ordered by the Office of Deputy President Jacob Zuma after it had received numerous complaints.

Zuma’s office pointed out this week that it had no record of the complaints and had not ordered the investigation.

l In an article entitled “Millions for MK veterans go astray” in the same edition, it was reported that Phaundi Bob Mabaso, the secretary general of Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans’ Association (MKVA) was the former chair of the Gauteng branch of the South African Communist Party and a one-time ANC whip in the province’s legislature. Bob Mabaso, the whip in the Gauteng legislature, says he is not associated with the MKVA. Phaundi Bob Mabaso died last Saturday.
