NELSPRUIT will host the continent’s first African Peace Through Tourism Conference in March 2002 as part of a pan-African initiative to use the economic benefits of tourism to bring regional stability. The conference, designed to foster wider institutional support community tourism projects, is expected to attract an estimated 600 international delegates and is underwritten by the African Travel Association and will be jointly hosted by the Mpumalanga Tourism Authority (MTA) and International Institute for Peace Through Tourism between March 3 – 7 in 2002. Some of the world’s leading tourism strategists and creative thinkers will lead debates to develop practical mechanisms for kickstarting profitable rural and community based tourism ventures. The conference will also attempt to identify specific bridge building projects, with an emphasis on social and environmental responsibility, for funding drives.
