BRITISH bomb experts and Sierra Leonean soldiers have defused 13 bombs in Sierra Leone’s northwestern Port Loko district. The bombs were discovered during cordon and search operations of the area and defused between Saturday and Tuesday, it said. Sierra Leone’s Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel group and the state-backed Civil Defence Forces (CDF), made up of traditional Kamajor hunters, have been disarming in Port Loko following a key peace agreement two weeks ago. The RUF has been fighting successive governments in Freetown since 1991 in a war which has seen tens of thousands of civilians savagely mutilated, raped or uprooted. – AFP
