BURUNDI REBELS KILL HEADMASTER AND SON

A SCHOOL headmaster and his four-year-old son have been killed in Gasenyi, northern Burundi, by rebels from the Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD), an official said on Monday. The official, in the neighbouring borough of Rango, said the FDD had killed Macaire Bizimana because he refused to collaborate with them. On June 2 the FDD murdered two people, from a list of five, in the nearby borough of Kayana. After enjoying relative calm since 1994, Kayana has seen an escalation of violence in the last two months, following the arrival of an estimated 4_000 FDD rebels from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they have rear bases. Religious officials blamed the FDD for the deaths of three civilians, including an archdeacon, during an ambush in Makamba, southern Burundi, on Saturday. – AFP
