SWEDISH SHIP ‘IN TROUBLE’ OF AFRICAN COAST

A SWEDISH -registered ship in difficulty off the west African coast with 186 Liberian passengers aboard is trying to make it to Ghana with little fuel remaining, according to the Swedish captain’s wife. “We have no idea where the ship is,” said Eva Furberg, wife of the ship’s 52-year-old Swedish captain, Henning Kielberg, by phone from Stockholm. Furberg said a Ghanaian colleague of her husband, who had been in touch over radio, had not been able to establish contact after Thursday morning. She said the passengers aboard the vessel were Liberians and all had papers to enter Ghana but had been refused. Many of the passengers are reported to be ill with conditions deteriorating and medical supplies used up. It was refused permission to land the majority of its passengers in Ghana and was refused permission to dock by authorities in Benin, said Furberg. – AFP
