Evidence wa ka Ngobeni
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) this week delivered a scathing attack on one of Zimbabwe’s leading cabinet ministers.
In Cosatu Weekly the federation accused Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Jonathan Moyo of being an “immature politician”.
Moyo criticised Cosatu last week for supporting the two-day strike organised by the Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). He said Cosatu’s support for the ZCTU stayaway was “opportunistic and unAfrican, as it is supporting an illegal action”.
“Zimbabwean workers toiled and suffered in support of the anti-apartheid struggle but Cosatu has buried its head in the sand like an ungrateful ostrich Where is the solidarity with the Zim workers?”
Cosatu responded: “We support the ZCTU against the continued level of threats and intimidation against trade unionists and workers, especially by state officials, and renew our call for the restoration of full democratic rights to the people of Zimbabwe.”
Cosatu said it was disappointed with the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“While it is clear that Zimbabwe is a sovereign state, it is inexcusable that the governments of the SADC have left the government to terrorise both the economy and ordinary citizens … causing chaos in the economies of the SADC.”
