NIGERIAN PORT ABOUT TO SINK

NIGERIA’S second largest port, in the southern oil city of Port Harcourt, is in danger of collapsing because of corrosion of underwater structures, officials stated on Thursday. The port in Port Harcourt was built some 88 years ago and many of its structures are now crumbling, officials said, confirming reports in the Nigerian press. On Wednesday, port manager Anya Kalu told Nigerian reporters that facilities had deteriorated and the port stood the risk of sinking unless repairs are carried out. The port was a target of aerial and artillery bombarbment during the 30-month Nigerian civil war which ended in 1970. Nigeria’s largest sea port is Apapa port in Lagos. – AFP
