THE South African Broadcasting Corporation has refused to apologise to the Namibian Government and President Sam Nujoma for having allegedly “tricked” him into an interview. Special Assignment Editing Manager Chris Marguord told The Star newspaper in South Africa that the SABC had consulted its lawyers and would not apologise. Marguord said it was disturbing to note that the Namibian Government is not challenging the authenticity of the report, but only the way the interview was requested. “Namibian President Sam Nujoma is guilty of publicly attacking the media, minority rights, especially those of homosexuals and, if the media reports, it is not their creation, but his,” Marguord said. The Namibian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Information and Broadcasting has lodged a complaint with the South African Broadcasting Monitoring and Complaints Unit, alleging that a team from the SABC’s Special Assignment programme arranged an interview with Nujoma under false pretences. – The Namibian
