Mboniso Sigonyela
It is rare that a company finds a non-executive of Vincent Mntambo’s calibre. He has a master’s degree in law from Yale and is credited with the miraculous turnaround at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration where he is chairperson.
Mntambo joins the Aveng board with effect from July 31 as a non-executive director. He brings a wide range of experiences, from consulting to a three-year stint as director general of the Gauteng provincial government. During his tenure as director general, the Ministry of Public Service and Administration judged the Gauteng province the best run in South Africa.
Mntambo’s appointment will go a long way towards meeting the King committee’s recommendation for a strong, independent board.
Mntambo was born 44 years ago in Soweto and taught law at the North West and Durban Westville universities before leaving for the United States.
“Labour relations is one area that has been lacking in our board and we are sure he [Mntambo] will fit into that role,” says Aveng CEO Carl Grim.
Mntambo is also a director in the strategy and business consultancy Sediba Consulting and a board member of EyeSizwe Mining, EyeSizwe Coal and Everest Systems Solutions.
His appointment follows the resignation of Keith Kunene from the Aveng board. Kunene left after bad publicity due to investigations into bribery and corruption at the Central Energy Fund, which he chaired.
Mntambo says when he left the provincial government he decided to focus on building his consultancy firm and the Aveng appointment is his first in a listed company. “I wanted to take one step at a time.”
Aveng listed in 1999 and owns the Grinaker-LTA and Alpha brands.
