THE Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions urged thousands of Swazi workers on Sunday to boycott King Mswati III’s consitutional summons. Mswati has called upon the entire Swazi nation to converge on Friday outside the capital Mbabane, where he will present the findings of a Constitutional Review Commission (CRC). Union leaders called on their supporters at Sunday’s highly charged meeting to stay away on Friday, saying the commission’s findings will only represent the views of royalists in the tiny kingdom, not those of all Swazis. The commission’s terms of reference stated categorically that no organised formations, only individuals, could be allowed to make submissions. Workers resolved on Sunday that they would meet again on September 23 to discuss bringing down the ruling Dlamini dynasty. Women will march to the cabinet offices in Mbabane on the same day, and bare their behinds in protest, they announced. Some two weeks ago, the federation had to call off a mass meeting, intended to discuss a draconian new decree strengthening Mswati’s powers over his one million citizens. – AFP
